Armstrong Building delivered a transformative extension and complete refurbishment to the existing sports hall at St Aidan’s, turning it into a state-of-the-art performing arts precinct that balances architectural impact, structural ingenuity, and acoustical finesse.

Scope of Works

• Major extensions at both ends of the building:
• A three-storey structure on one end.
• A two-storey structure on the opposite end.

• Installation of a large structural steel truss system to span the building over an existing on-site church, preserving heritage and site integrity.
• Full internal reconfiguration tailored to performing arts functions, including:
• Soundproof recording studios.
• Multipurpose performance spaces.

Site Conditions & Engineering Response

• The building footprint sat directly above a subterranean water table.
• Deep foundation solutions implemented using rock anchors to engage sound footing.
• Deployment of multiple waterproofing systems to address hydrostatic pressure and long-term durability below basement level.

Acoustical Performance

• Sound reduction measures incorporated throughout the build to ensure legal sound transmission levels—especially critical during events such as school dances and music rehearsals.
• Room-specific acoustic treatment to enable professional-grade recording and performance capabilities.
